The challenge
A thirty-two tab spreadsheet held every skill for every product, and the percentages at the bottom of it were quietly wrong - five products divided by four or five rows when the real skill count was forty-five, sixty-four, seventy; two had no total at all; a roll-up hard-coded zeros for three people.
What we built
We replaced it with a web app on Google Workspace over a structured Sheets database - seventeen products, twenty-eight modules, nearly thirteen hundred skills and over ten thousand score rows migrated and reconciled against the old sheet. Staff assess themselves through a browser, seeing only the products they are scoped to, with search, filters and a copy-from-a-colleague starting point; managers get a drill-down matrix from product to module to section to individual skill, every percentage recomputed at read time from the raw answers so a hand-typed divisor can never creep back, plus a team column that turns red where fewer than two people know a skill. A standard-skills view shows quotation, demo, installation or implementation capability across every product and person, separating "cannot" from "never assessed". Saves are written to protected ranges so two people can never overwrite each other, and permissions are enforced on the server. Training targets are now set from numbers that are correct.
The result
Before: wrong percentages in a 32-tab sheet. Now: accurate drill-down matrix.
