The challenge
The consolidated TDS statement downloaded from TRACES is a caret-delimited file that no ordinary tool will open - to see what a quarter actually contains, the filer either loads it back into the return preparation utility or reads it on screen a record at a time.
What we built
We built a converter that turns that file into a three-sheet Excel workbook - deductor particulars, one row per challan, one row per deductee - in a single double-click, with the workbook written beside the source file and opened automatically. The form is detected from the statement itself, so a 26Q file gets the rate-of-deduction column and a 24Q salary file gets the date of deposit and an employee-wise annexure instead, and every code in the file - section, state, deductor category, reason for lower deduction, OLTAS status - is expanded into words from a configuration file the client can extend on site without the software being rebuilt. Each challan carries a reconciliation block that separates the two figures a reviewer actually needs apart: tax the annexure has claimed against the challan, which must tie to zero, and tax deposited but not yet allotted to any deductee, which is money still available for adjustment rather than an error. The whole thing runs locally with no internet connection and never writes to the statement - a quarter that used to be reviewed record by record is now a workbook on screen in a few seconds.
The result
Before: record-by-record review. Now: a few seconds.
